Flying: Nearest major airports are Denver, then Albuquerque. Closer regional airports include Gunnison, Montrose, Grand Junction, and Colorado Springs. If driving from Denver, going via South Park on I285 or via Summit County and Leadville on I70, I24, and then I285 will take you about the same amount of time. Just before Poncha Springs, turn west on I50 and go over Monarch Pass through Gunnison. About 9 miles west of Gunnison, turn south on Highway149 at the Blue Mesa Reservoir and go about 45 miles.
Getting There:
From Gunnison, CO (approx. 55 miles), take Hwy 149 south off of Hwy 50 at the upper end of Blue Mesa Lake.
From Creede, CO, take Hwy 149 approx. 55 miles north.
Cinnamon and Engineer passes are also options if you are coming from Silverton or Ouray and have 4WD, but note that they are no faster than going around on the paved highways (tho’ even more scenic!).
If you’re coming from Montrose, both the Lake City Cutoff and the Blue Mesa Cutoff are usually passable in cars with heavy duty tires, and may save you a little time. However, they can be muddy after a rain and sharp rocks in the road have taken more than a few tires when it is dry!
